How to E-Verify Your ITR: 5 Methods and the 30-Day Rule

Filing your ITR is not complete until you e-verify it. Under Rule 12(3) of the Income Tax Rules, e-verification must be done within 30 days of filing. An unverified return is treated as not filed.

Why E-Verification Is Not Optional

Submitting your ITR on the Income Tax e-Filing portal is only step one. The return is not valid until it is verified. Under Rule 12(3) of the Income Tax Rules, 1962 (amended by Notification No. 5/2023), you must e-verify your ITR within 30 days of filing.

An ITR that is filed but not e-verified within the 30-day window is treated as never filed — with all the associated consequences: Section 234F late fee, Section 234A interest, loss of carry-forward benefits, and potential penalties.

5 Ways to E-Verify Your ITR

Method 1: Aadhaar OTP (Recommended — Instant)

  • Your Aadhaar must be linked to your PAN (mandatory since July 2017)
  • OTP is sent to the mobile number registered with UIDAI
  • Available 24/7 on the e-Filing portal
  • Fastest method — takes under 2 minutes

Method 2: Net Banking

  • Log in to your bank's net banking portal (partner banks include SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, etc.)
  • Navigate to the income tax section → verify return
  • Generates EVC (Electronic Verification Code) directly

Method 3: Bank Account EVC

  • From the e-Filing portal, generate an EVC via your pre-validated bank account
  • OTP sent to registered mobile; EVC valid for 72 hours
  • Works even without net banking access

Method 4: Demat Account EVC

  • From the e-Filing portal, generate EVC via your pre-validated demat account (held with CDSL or NSDL)
  • Useful for investors with active demat accounts

Method 5: Physical ITR-V (Slowest — 30-day risk)

  • If you cannot e-verify electronically, download ITR-V (Acknowledgement) from the portal
  • Print on A4, sign in blue ink, and send by speed post to:
CPC, Income Tax Department, Post Box No. 1, Electronic City Post Office, Bengaluru – 560100
  • Must reach CPC within 30 days of filing
  • No courier — only India Post speed post is accepted

Common E-Verification Errors and Fixes

"Aadhaar OTP not received": Your mobile number may not be the one registered with UIDAI. Update your Aadhaar-registered mobile at a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

"PAN-Aadhaar link pending": Check status at incometax.gov.in/pan-aadhaar-link-status. Unlinked PANs are inoperative and cannot e-verify via Aadhaar.

"Bank account not pre-validated": Pre-validate your bank account at e-Filing portal → Profile → My Bank Accounts before attempting EVC.

What Happens If You Miss the 30-Day Window?

If 30 days pass without e-verification:

  • The ITR is treated as not filed

  • To validate it, you must file a condonation request under Section 119(2)(b) to your jurisdictional Assessing Officer explaining the reason for delay

  • Approval is at the AO's discretion — not guaranteed

  • In the interim, all penalties for non-filing apply

The safest approach: E-verify on the same day as filing, using Aadhaar OTP. It takes 2 minutes and eliminates all risk.

The HRA mobile app sends e-verify reminders at 7, 14, and 25 days after your ITR is filed — so you never miss this critical step.

Under Rule 12(3) of the Income Tax Rules (amended by Notification No. 5/2023), an ITR not e-verified within 30 days of filing is treated as never filed. This triggers Section 234F late fee, Section 234A interest, loss of carry-forward rights, and potential penalties.

Can I e-verify my ITR through net banking?

Yes. Log in to your bank's net banking portal (partner banks include SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak), navigate to the income tax section, and verify your return. This generates an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) directly without needing a separate OTP.

What if I cannot e-verify electronically — is there a physical option?

Yes. Download the ITR-V (Acknowledgement) from the e-Filing portal, print on A4 paper, sign in blue ink, and send by India Post speed post only to CPC, Bengaluru – 560100. It must reach CPC within 30 days of filing. Courier is not accepted.

Can I e-verify a return filed in a previous year?

Yes, you can e-verify returns from previous years through the e-Filing portal using any of the electronic methods (Aadhaar OTP, net banking, bank account EVC, or demat account EVC). However, the 30-day rule applies from the original date of filing, so unverified old returns may already be treated as invalid.
