UDIN

What a UDIN is and why it matters

  • A UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number) is generated by the CA on the ICAI UDIN portal for each certificate or report they sign.
  • It is mandatory for certificates (from 1 Feb 2019), gst and tax audit reports (from 1 Apr 2019) and all attest work (from 1 Jul 2019).
  • The CA must generate it within 60 days of signing, and can revoke it only within 48 hours of generating it.
  • The portal moved to ICAI DigiCA on 20 Dec 2025. Banks, embassies and other users verify a UDIN there with an OTP.

Process

How a certificate is issued

  1. Tell us who is asking and for what. We confirm the certificate and the documents.
  2. Upload the documents. The figures are drawn from them, not from estimates.
  3. The CA reviews the draft against the documents and raises any query.
  4. The CA signs with a Class-3 DSC and generates the UDIN on the ICAI portal.
  5. You receive the signed certificate with its UDIN, ready for the bank, embassy or authority.

The scope is confirmed in writing before work begins. Projections go in a SAE 3400 examination report, not a certificate.

Income-tax Act 2025

Old and new form numbers

The Income-tax Act 2025 renumbered these forms from 1 Apr 2026. We write both numbers, because most requests still use the old one.

FAQs

Common questions

What is a UDIN on a CA certificate?

A UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number) is generated by the Chartered Accountant on the ICAI UDIN portal for each certificate or report they sign. It has been mandatory for certificates since 1 Feb 2019, for GST and tax audit reports since 1 Apr 2019 and for all attest work since 1 Jul 2019. Anyone relying on the certificate can check the UDIN on udin.icai.org.

How long does a CA certificate take?

Typical turnaround after complete documents: 1–2 working days for simple balance-sheet or bank certificates, 3–10 working days for DGFT, RERA and valuation certificates, and 5–20 working days for audit reports. These are working ranges, not statutory periods.

Is Form 15CB still used?

The Income-tax Act 2025 renumbered the forms from 1 Apr 2026. The CA certificate for a foreign remittance is now Form 146 (formerly 15CB), and the remitter files Form 145 (formerly 15CA). The ICAI UDIN portal lists Form 146 as its own document type.

Can a CA certify projected or provisional figures?

No certificate is given on provisional figures. Projections, such as CMA data for a bank, are covered by an examination report under SAE 3400, which is a report and not a certificate.

Which cities do you serve?

Our office is in Visakhapatnam. We serve clients in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam and across India: documents are uploaded online and the certificate is signed digitally by the CA.

How does a bank or embassy check that a certificate is genuine?

They verify the UDIN printed on the certificate at udin.icai.org, using an OTP. The steps are on our UDIN verification page.
