Indian Income Tax Return Filing for Gulf-based NRIs
Prepared by Harun Raaj & Associates, Chartered Accountants — for individuals with Indian income who live and work in the UAE (or elsewhere in the Gulf).
Who this is for
You may find this relevant if, in the current year:
- You live and work in the UAE (or elsewhere in the Gulf) and hold Indian income — rent from property in India, interest on NRE/NRO/FCNR deposits, capital gains on Indian shares or mutual funds, or Indian salary for part of the year;
- Your stay in India in the financial year has been short (or you are unsure how your residential status is determined for the year), and you want the return filed under the correct status;
- You have received a notice, or a bank or tenant has asked for a filed return or a lower-deduction certificate;
- You are unsure whether a return is required at all this year — for some Gulf residents with certain income, it genuinely is not, and being told so early is worth as much as being filed.
This page is written for individuals. It is not aimed at companies or at tax residents of countries other than the UAE/Gulf region.
What the service covers
For each engagement, we:
- 01
Determine your residential status for the financial year from your stay record and the relevant conditions, and file (or advise not filing) on that basis.
- 02
Classify your income correctly: NRE / NRO / FCNR interest, rental income, capital gains (including the resident versus non-resident treatment of specific instruments), and any Indian salary.
- 03
Apply the benefits a non-resident is entitled to claim — and the ones that are expressly not available to non-residents — so nothing is claimed that should not be.
- 04
Reconcile TDS deducted on your Indian income (banks, tenants, brokers) against the return, and follow up refund credits where due.
- 05
Prepare and file the correct ITR form for your facts, with the schedules a non-resident return requires (including asset-and-liability and foreign-source schedules where they apply).
- 06
Respond to pre-filing validation notices for the returns we file, and flag (separately, before you decide) anything that needs a formal rectification or appeal instead.
Not covered (available separately if you need it): DTAA/foreign-tax-credit work involving two or more countries of residence, remittance-related certifications (Form 15CA/CB), Indian business income, and estate or succession planning..
How it works
From enquiry to filed acknowledgement.
Enquiry — write to us through the contact page with a short description of your income in India and your country of residence.
Scoping call — we schedule a call, go through your facts, and confirm what work is actually needed (including whether any filing is needed at all this year).
Documents — you receive a short document checklist (passport and travel-stay record, bank statements, Form 26AS/AIS, tenancy or sale papers as applicable).
Preparation and review — the return is prepared, and you review a draft with the computation before anything is filed.
Filing and acknowledgement — you e-verify (we walk you through it), and you receive the filed acknowledgement and computation for your records.
How to start
Send an enquiry.
