How to verify a CA certificate's UDIN
Every certificate a Chartered Accountant signs must carry a UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number) generated on the ICAI portal. Any bank, embassy or authority can check it on udin.icai.org. This works for a certificate from any CA, not only ours.
Verify a UDIN in four steps
- Find the UDIN on the certificate. It is an 18-character code of letters and numbers.
- Open udin.icai.org and choose to verify a UDIN. Use bulk verification if you have many certificates.
- Enter the UDIN and your details, then the OTP the portal sends you.
- Compare what the portal returns with the certificate in your hand. If anything differs, or the UDIN is not found, do not rely on the certificate until the CA explains.
The 60-day and 48-hour rules
| Rule | What it means when you verify |
|---|---|
| Generated within 60 days of signing | The CA must generate the UDIN within 60 days of signing the certificate. |
| Revocable only within 48 hours | A UDIN can be revoked only within 48 hours of its generation. After that it cannot be revoked. |
Which documents need a UDIN
- Certificates: mandatory from 1 Feb 2019.

- For tax audit reports, from 1 Apr 2026 a member can generate at most 60 tax-audit UDINs in a financial year.
